Kadena Air Base, Japan — Members of the Business and Enterprise Systems Product Innovation (BESPIN) team completed a milestone mission at Kadena Air Base from November 10-22, delivering 5G-enabled iPads to the 1st Special Operations Aircraft Maintenance Squadron (1 SOAMXS). The deployment represents a critical step in leveraging BESPIN’s Mobile Operations Support Suite (MOSS) to streamline aircraft maintenance operations in the defense sector.

“This deployment underscores BESPIN’s commitment to empowering the warfighter through advanced technology and innovation,” said Lt. Col. Tyler Hough, BESPIN Chief Executive Officer. “By delivering solutions that address the unique challenges faced by 1 SOAMXS, we are not only improving operational efficiency but also strengthening the strategic capabilities of our defense forces.”
Despite some logistical and technical challenges, the mission laid a solid foundation for 5G connectivity to further enhance aircraft maintenance operations in operational efficiency. Feedback from 1 SOAMXS maintainers and leadership emphasized the transformative potential of these devices while providing valuable insights for refining processes and applications.
Maintainers emphasized the importance of user-friendly applications, noting that complicated apps deter application adoption. BESPIN successfully deployed a suite of modern maintenance apps for use in and around the flightline. This increases maintainer efficiency and reduces errors, improving sortie generation time.
Now that BESPIN team members have returned from Japan, they’re focusing on key takeaways from the visit. The team intends to improve flightline connectivity by migrating maintainers off of unreliable Wi-Fi pucks to full integration with 5G networks, increasing network stability and speed, and is exploring solutions that provide more seamless access to critical systems.

The success of this deployment has earned BESPIN an invitation to participate in Exercise Freedom Shield scheduled for early 2025. The team is committed to further enhancing the MOSS capabilities and developing a comprehensive roadmap for this critical exercise.
BESPIN is a software solution center chartered to build the USAF Mobile Center of Excellence and scale cloud and mobile application development across the Air Force and Department of Defense.
