Schofield Barracks, Oahu, HI — From February 5-9, 2024, a team of Business and Enterprise Systems Product Innovation (BESPIN) Airmen joined over 600 Department of Defense (DoD) civilians, contractors, and military at the Bravo 11 Hackathon held at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. This year’s event focused on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to solve various DoD use cases and problem sets.

The BESPIN Airmen team, along with partners from the National Geospatial Agency (NGA) Project Maven, worked on a use case involving the prediction of ship positions in the Indo-Pacific area of operations. Using Automated Identification System and computer satellite imagery data, the team developed machine learning models to estimate locations of ships and display them visually on a map interface. Heat maps highlighted the probability of ships remaining at certain positions over time.

“Events like the Bravo 11 Hackathon allow our junior enlisted Airmen to showcase their skills while working alongside industry experts to solve real-world problems,” said BESPIN Chief Operating Officer (COO), Lt. Col. Tyler Hough. “The experience has been invaluable for our Airmen to develop their talents and make connections within the DoD technology community.”

Through funding support to attend events such as this, BESPIN Airmen are able to hone their analytical, coding, and data science skills on operationally-relevant use cases. The team is already looking forward to applying lessons learned from this year’s Bravo 11 Hackathon at the next competition.

BESPIN is a software solution center chartered to build the Air Force Mobile Center of Excellence and to scale cloud and mobile application development across the Air Force and Department of Defense.
